CLASSIC BRITISH BIKES
CLASSIC BRITISH
BIKES
The motorcycle was invented in continental
Europe, but it was Britain that, as much as any other country, helped to give it its modern form. Invented as the Victorian age drew to a close, and mainly a plaything of the leisured classes, the British bike rapidly gained in reliability and sophistication.
It grew to maturity in the twentieth century when, for fifty years, the history of the British industry encapsulated most of the important stages in the motorcycle's development process.
Forced into a utilitarian role in WWI, the motorcycle emerged poised to fill a demand for mass transport, and this ushered in a golden age of development and design. Despite the economic hardships of the |920s, Britain still managed to produce some of the industry's greatest classics, many spurred on by racing, in which British products reigned supreme.
Following WWII, where they were again pressed into service, well-designed and solidly-engineered British machines were exported in tens of thousands to new, enthusiastic markets, proving again and again that the industry, even faced with massive competition, had the potential to invent innovative models with more than just skin-deep appeal.
